Call for papers
The eighth Designs on E-Learning international conference in the use of technology for teaching and learning in art, design and communication will be hosted by the Centre for Learning and Teaching (cltad) at University of the Arts, London, UK, on the 5th, 6th and 7th September 2012.

Submitted abstracts will be assessed in a blind review process.

 

The format of the conference will be innovative, with barcamps, streamed sessions, discussions, performances and creative work. We are particularly interested in submissions by artists, museums and galleries and those involved in Art and Design practice in education.

 

Designs on eLearning  invites the submission of abstracts for consideration by 20th April 2012.   The abstract should not exceed 1000 words in length. This will be the version published in the Designs on eLearning 2012 Conference Proceedings.

The Designs on E-Learning website will be available for the uploading of Abstracts and other proposals from 5th February 2012.

The conference Review Committee will make a decision in May based on the abstract.

 

The accepted papers will be available on the website well in advance of the conference.  Presentations at the conference will be of limited duration to maximise the time for discussion.

 

Please add your details to our Mailing List if you intend to submit an Abstract, or you wish updates on the Conference.

 

Posters/Demos/Workshop Sessions

There will be space available for the display of work in progress, ongoing projects, creative performances and research findings relating to the use of computers in teaching and learning in art, design and communication.  The Designs on eLearning Committee will consider descriptions of projects or concepts of no more than 500 words for proposals.

 

It is the intention of the Organising Committee to select the most interesting presentations at the conference and invite the presenters to expand the material into a full research paper to be published in a special edition of an appropriate journal, following peer review by a distinguished international committee.  Negotiations are underway with journals in the field to secure this.

Emre Arolat and Joseph Grima have been appointed as the curators of the first Istanbul Design Biennial, which will be realized between 13 October12 December 2012 by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts.

The curators will independently interpret the theme "Imperfection", adopted at the suggestion of Deyan Sudjic, Director of The Design Museum in London, and a member of the biennial's advisory board. Emre Arolat and Joseph Grima will present two different approaches within the framework of the biennial theme. The framework of their curatorial studies will be announced at the beginning of 2012.

Critical Photography series

Since 1986, Intellect has provided a vital space for widening critical debate in new and emerging subjects. As a leading academic publisher in the fields of creative practice and popular culture, Intellect has a strong list of visual culture and contemporary art focused publications. We aim to offer a platform for photographers, writers and creative artists to present and critically reflect on their work and to produce original, adventurous projects.

Stimulus Respond - Ritual

We are currently soliciting contributions for the next edition of Stimulus Respond, called Ritual. Contributions might be literally or abstractly related to Ritual, and we encourage, as always, creative and experimental approaches to the theme. In congruence with Stimulus Respond's undisciplined approach, we welcome submissions from new and established contributors from within, between, and beyond such fields as cultural studies, anthropology, literary criticism, fashion, creative writing, politics, visual cultures, architecture, theatre, film and screen studies, sociology, media and communications and philosophy.

Textile Exhibition

We will be hosting a textile exhibition between 9th April to 20th May 2011 at The Butterfly Rooms in Saltaire. Enquiries from all areas of textile design welcome from fashion designers, surface pattern graduates through to millinery and anything in between! This will be a varied and exciting exhibition, celebrating the work of designers from across the region.

IC tomorrow Digital Innovation Contest



A total fund of £200,000 is on offer through the Digital Innovation Contest for up to 20 UK digital entrepreneurs, application and service providers to conduct consumer trials to bring innovative creative sector applications to market.

Working in partnership with major global content providers, including EMI, Getty Images and Sony Music, the competition is aimed at applications across the creative market sectors, including music, TV, film, publishing and a 'wildcard'/cross sector option.

Proposals should address one or more of the following challenges facing the digital industry:

* Creating innovative business models.
* Opening new markets.
* Enhancing or creating value for existing digital assets.
* Encouraging new forms of digital content consumption.

Up to 20 consumer trials will be funded through the scheme, with £10,000 funding available, plus access to the IC tomorrow digital test bed, one-to-one licensing advice and commercial content, to undertake consumer trials over a six month period.

The competition is likely to be of specific interest to organisations that already have a digital application or service and require access to commercial grade content or a controlled trial environment in which to test new business and licensing models.

The deadline for entries is 11 March.

Up to 40 entries will be selected for a final live pitching session, taking place at the D_Media conference at BAFTA, London on 30 March to determine the winners. Successful projects will start in early May 2011 and last for up to six months.
